Pastor James H. Williams received his call to preach the gospel in 1961. In April of 1965, Pastor Williams was led by the Holy Spirit to found and pastor the Christ Missionary Baptist Church. The original site of Christ Missionary was at the corner of Oxford and 40½ streets in the Independence Heights area of Houston, Texas. After the building was acquired and furnished, Pastor Williams, his wife Ruth, and their seven children entered the new sanctuary.
As the church grew, so did the roster of ministers. Rev. Billy Williams answered the call to preach in 1966. In 1976, 10 years later, Rev. James S. Williams received his call and, in 1994, birthed the Graceland Missionary Baptist Church. Rev. Dwight Williams accepted his call in 1989. In 2010 he re-dedicated his life to continue his quest to preach the gospel. Rev. Jimmie Williams heeded the call in 1993 and, in 2007, founded the New Canaan Missionary Baptist Church. Pastor Williams’ grandson, Rev. John Troy Hammond, received the call to preach at the age of 11 and preached his first sermon at 12 years old. Over the years, other ministers on the roster have included: Rev. Albert Powell, Rev. Robert Batts, Rev. Joe Taylor, Rev. Ron Clayton, Rev. Curtis Collins, Minister George Thymes and Pastor Jonathan Goff.
Other ordained deacons include Deacon Albert McShan, Deacon Joe Taylor, Deacon Shady Goodson, Deacon Nathan White, Deacon Ernest Ray, Deacon Arquilla Williams, Deacon Larry Morris, and Deacon James Simmons. Deacon Israel Doucet and Deacon Ulysses Weatherall were ordained as junior deacons. Deacon Karl Anthony Davis, Deacon Joseph Lorenzo Houston and, Deacon SW Johnson were ordained as servants in 2015. In 2007, Rev. Billy Williams received the torch to carry on as pastor of the Christ Missionary Baptist Church while Rev. James H. Williams served as Pastor Emeritus. The scriptures tell us in 1st Timothy 5:17 to: “Let the elders that rule well be counted worthy of double honor, especially they who labor in the word and doctrine.” With these words in mind and being obedient to the Holy Spirit, the 2nd Sunday in June has been set aside as Founder’s Day in honor of Pastor Emeritus James H. Williams. Pastor Emeritus James H. Williams went to be with the Lord on October 22, 2012.
Today, Christ Missionary is blessed to have Rev. James Stanley Williams (pastor of the Graceland Missionary Baptist Church), and Rev. Ronald Clayton, as minister servants on the pastoral staff. There are several ministries in place which include the Women Mission Ministry, a Brotherhood Ministry and the Kids for Christ Youth Ministry.
